NORTH KOREA LAUNCHED THE HWASONG-14 ICBM AN INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE
On Tuesday morning, North Korea conducted what it claimed to be its first successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The Hwasong-14 ICBM, launched on a steep trajectory, flew some 933 kilometers in 39 minutes reaching an altitude of 2,802 kilometers, according to the country’s state television.
The Russian military, however, questioned Pyongyang’s claim, saying the missile only flew around 535 kilometers, reaching an altitude of 510 kilometers before falling into the Sea of Japan. The assessment places the North Korean missile fired Tuesday in the category of an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM).
The US Pacific Command initially identified the projectile fired by North Korea as a land-based, intermediate-range ballistic missile. American military data indicated that it flew some 930 kilometers over 37 minutes. Yet, and despite the assessment, the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, lent credibility to North Korea’s claim that it launched an ICBM.
“The United States strongly condemns North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. Testing an ICBM represents a new escalation of the threat to the United States, our allies and partners, the region, and the world,” Tillerson said in a statement.
Russia, China: N. Korea must freeze nuclear activities, US halt THAAD deployment.\
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, meeting in Moscow, called for a freeze of Kim Jong-un’s nuclear and ballistic programs which are in breach of UNSC resolutions.
But Tillerson said global action is required to stop what he called the North Korean “global threat,” as he warned countries against supporting Pyongyang. “We will never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea.”
The US also called a United Nations Security Council meeting Wednesday to discuss the latest test launch by North Korea.
American and South Korean militaries have launched surface-to-surface tactical missiles into neutral waters as a show of force against the latest North Korean ballistic test, despite the joint Russian-Chinese warning not to escalate tensions on the peninsula.
“Eighth US Army and Republic of Korea (ROK) military personnel conducted a combined event exercising assets countering North Korea’s destabilizing and unlawful actions on July 4,” United States Forces in Korea said in a statement.
“This exercise utilized the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and the Republic of Korea Hyunmoo Missile II, which fired missiles into territorial waters of South Korea along the East Coast,” the military statement added.
The Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) is a guided surface-to-surface missile (SSM) produced by Lockheed Martin. It has a range of some 300 kilometers, and can strike targets deeps inside enemy territory. The guided missile can be fired from multiple rocket launchers, including the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) M270, and High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

SPAIN: EU NEEDS TO DISCUSS ITALY MIGRANT REQUEST
Spain’s foreign minister says that all European Union members need to discuss Italy’s proposal for other countries in the bloc to open their ports to ships carrying rescued migrants. Alfonso Dastis told journalists in Madrid that “our position is that exceptional situations require exceptional measures as a response, but they need to be discussed among all countries.” Italy has pleaded for help as thousands of migrants and refugees pour onto its shores. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, decried an “unfolding tragedy” in the country.

SHIV KAPUR EARNS TICKET TO THE OPEN AFTER TOPPING QUALIFYING EVENT AT WOBURN
Milton Keynes, England, July 4, 2017: It’s turning out to be a highly productive year for India’s Shiv Kapur. The 35-year-old, who posted a win and a tied second finish on the Asian Tour in the first half of the season, added another feather to his cap by earning a ticket to his third British Open after winning one of the five Final Qualifying events staged in the United Kingdom on Tuesday.
Kapur, who will be the lone Indian at this year’s Open Championship, earned his berth at the year’s third Major after shooting scores of 71 and 65 that gave him first place at eight-under-136. Shiv was thus among the three players with the best scores who qualified from The Marquess’ Course at Woburn in England.
The top three players from each of the five Final Qualifying events made it to this year’s British Open which will be held at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in England from July 20 – 23.
Kapur finished two shots ahead of the English duo of Ian Poulter and Toby Tree, the other two players to qualify from Woburn.
Shiv, who made 13 birdies, a bogey and two double-bogeys in his two rounds on Tuesday, is now all set to make his fifth Major appearance.
The two-time Asian Tour winner, who returned to the winner’s circle in Asia after an 11-year gap earlier this year, has previously been part of the field at the British Open in 2006 and 2013. He missed the halfway cut by one shot in 2006 and finished tied 73rd in 2013.
Kapur’s other two Major appearances have come at the US Open in 2014 and 2015. He will now be playing at a Major after two years.
Incidentally, Shiv, who is currently placed 305 in the world rankings, holds the Indian record for the best finish at the US Open thanks to his tied 23rd place at the 2014 edition.

PHILIPPINES’ TOP COURT UPHOLDS DUTERTE’S MARTIAL LAW
The Philippines’ top court on Tuesday upheld President Rodrigo Duterte’s martial law declaration in the southern third of the country, dismissing petitions to nullify it. Supreme Court spokesman Theodore Te said 11 of 15 justices voted to dismiss the consolidated petitions filed by opposition lawmakers, activist groups and four women from Maraw – the southern city where an attack by Islamic State-aligned militants prompted Duterte to declare martial law on May 23. Te said three of the justices voted to partially grant the petitions while one voted to grant them. Details of the justices’ vote were not immediately known, with Te saying the justices’ draft opinions will be finalized and submitted Wednesday

CATALONIA TO DECLARE IMMEDIATE INDEPENDENCE IF ‘YES’ WINS REFERENDUM
Catalonia will declare independence “immediately” if a majority of the Spanish region’s voters opt for independence in a Scotland-style referendum called for October, its ruling coalition said Tuesday. “If the majority of votes are for creating a Catalan republic, obviously independence will have to be declared immediately,” said Gabriela Serra, a member of the separatist coalition that governs Catalonia. Her comments came as the coalition introduced a law aimed at extracting the northeastern region from Spain’s legal system, in a bid to circumvent all legal and practical challenges to organising a referendum. It will be submitted to a vote in the regional parliament, where separatists hold a majority, at the end of August.
