Pope calls for end to Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Pope Francis has called for an early resolution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians during a visit to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christianity.
The Pope, now on a three-day Middle East tour, arrived in the West Bank city on Sunday, and met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas there.
Standing alongside Abbas at a welcome ceremony, the Pope said, “the time has come to put an end to this situation, which has become increasingly unacceptable.” He said Israelis and Palestinians need to create two states, and live in peace with internationally recognized borders. His comments imply his view that Israel should make more efforts for peace.
After the meeting, Pope Francis held a mass in front of nearly 10,000 people.
At the end of the mass, the Pope called on the Israeli and Palestinian presidents to join him at the Vatican for a peace initiative.
