Italy’s new govt wins confidence vote in senate
Italy’s new coalition government led by leftist Prime Minister Enrico Letta won a confidence vote in the upper house of parliament on Tuesday. The MPs voted 233 in favor and 59 against the Letta government, AFP reported. The government was formed after a two-month deadlock caused by inconclusive elections in February.
European court rules Tymoshenko’s 2011 arrest in Ukraine illegal
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that the arrest of Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in 2011 in a gas case was illegal and politically motivated, media reports say. She was sentenced to seven years in prison in October 2011, when she was convicted of exceeding her powers as premier while negotiating a gas contract with Russia in 2009. Tymoshenko has said Ukraine’s government rigged the case and is keeping her in inhumane conditions, the allegations denied by the government lawyers as groundless. It’s unclear if a decision by the European court would be legally binding in Ukraine.
Dutch royals prepare for handover
Thousands of Dutch well-wishers gathered in Amsterdam’s Dam Square early on Tuesday, waiting to see the new king and queen. Willem-Alexander becomes the first king of the Netherlands in more than 120 years on Tuesday, when Queen Beatrix passes the crown to her eldest son. ”He’s ready, in every way,”Reuters quoted Queen Beatrix as saying of her 46-year-old son.
