NIRANJAN BOUNCES BACK FROM AN INJURY
TO BREAK 15-YEAR-OLD ASIAN RECORD

Niranjan with his spoils after placing 3rd in 50 mtrs butterfly at IDM Berlin.
Swimmer Niranjan Mukundan set an Asian record in the 200m backstroke event at the IDM Berlin Para-Swimming World Series 2018. He clocked 3:16.01 seconds, eclipsing Van Chung’s existing mark of 4:02.49 seconds. Van Chung, a Vietnamese swimmer, had set the record back in 2003 in the S7 category.

Niranjan not only broke a record, he also won a bronze medal in the 50 meters Butterfly. His performances have been honed under the watchful eye of his childhood coach John Christopher, and have benefited from a long-term training stint at the Thanyapura Swimming Centre in Thailand, where he now trains.
Niranjan has undergone as many as 16 surgeries since birth due to his congenital condition, spina bifida. His lower limbs have developed diminished sensation over the years, due to which he has suffered from recurring ulcers on his ankle, caused by friction against surfaces he cannot feel. His support from the foundation is utilised, among other things, to consult dermatologist Dr. Vinayak, who has been managing and treating his injury. Watching Niranjan repeatedly put his injury woes behind him is a true lesson in fortitude with his record-breaking performance in Germany also coming while he was still injured! His medical team assisted him in dressing his wound such that he would not be inhibited by the injury. Needless to say, the champion made best use of the opportunity to go out and make a mark!
The foundation has also assisted him in successfully completing his reclassification and obtaining his new disability category, which pits him against a similar level of competition. He is currently training to qualify for and compete at the Para Asian Games, to be held in Indonesia in October 2018, under the watchful eyes and constant guidance of his entire medical team. GoSports Foundation is delighted to be supporting Niranjan in his goal to achieve sports excellence.

For the same Shri Sampla stated, “I had work in many places as a plumber and what I am today is all because of the blessings of lord Ram. Last year I played the role of a unique king in LuvKush Ramleela and got a huge appreciation from members of mantrimandal my close ones and this is the same reason I want to serve Shree Ram so when I got the opportunity to play Himavan’s role, I worked on it with full dedication”.
