ROHINGY CRISIS : EU ADDITIONAL AID OF 3M EUROS

European Union has announced additional aid of three million euros to address the pressing needs of the Rohingyas both in Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Making the announcement, EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Cristos Stylianides said, the funding comes on top of the 12 million euros aid announced in May 2017 when he visited Rakhine State.
As more and more refugees continue pouring into Bangladesh, the additional funding will be used to provide emergency shelter, food, water and medical assistance to the Rohingyas.
Like all EU aid, the funding will be chanelised through international NGOs, the UN or the Red Cross. The EU continues to call for full humanitarian access to the Rohingyas in Myanmar so as to be able to address the precarious humanitarian situation there and to ensure that it does not spiral into a crisis.
In a separate statement, EU Vice President Federica Mogherini said besides full humanitarian access, the priority is also to address the root cause of the conflict by implementing the recommendations of the Kofi Annan commission.

PRESIDENT OF SINGAPORE HALIMAH YACOB

Singapore, Halimah Yacob was declared the President-elect today after her nomination papers were found to be in order. She will be Singapore’s first female President and the first Malay head of state in 47 years.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said,Halimah will be sworn in as country’s eighth President tomorrow evening at the Istana. Halima told supporters at the nomination centre after the Returning Officer declared her President-elect that even though this is a reserved election, she is not a reserved President. UNSC: MYANMAR SESSION IN CAMERA

United Nations Security Council will hold a closed-door session today on the violence in the Rakhine state of Myanmar. The meeting was requested by Britain and Sweden. The exodus from Rakhine state began after Rohingya militants attacked police posts on the 25th of last month, prompting a military backlash that forced nearly 3 lakh 70,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee their homes.
Myanmar government has been accused by the UN of ethnic cleansing. Myanmar’s military says it is fighting Rohingya militants and denies reports that it is targeting civilians. The Rohingya, a mostly Muslim minority in Buddhist-majority Rakhine, have long experienced persecution in Myanmar, which says they are illegal immigrants. Last week, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote a letter to the Council urging members to send a message to Myanmar authorities to end the security operation.

ASHOK KUMAR, VIKRANT CHOPRA HIT THE FRONT ON DAY ONE OF JAIPUR OPEN 2017

Jaipur, September 13, 2017: Ashok Kumar of Delhi and Noida’s Vikrant Chopra returned flawless rounds of eight-under-62 at the Rambagh Golf Club on Wednesday to establish a two-shot lead in round one of the Jaipur Open 2017.

Kolkata’s Divyanshu Bajaj occupied third at six-under-64 at the Rs. 30 lakh event.

Ashok Kumar, playing only his second event of the season due to recent health issues, made an explosive return to the PGTI with a 62. The former PGTI Order of Merit champion hit it with pin-point precision on the back-nine making two birdie tap-ins and another birdie conversion from four feet.

The 34-year-old, who plays at the DLF Golf & Country Club in Gurgaon, then had a contrasting front-nine as he made some long conversions. He sank four birdies from a range of 12 to 30 feet.

Ashok said, “It’s great to return to competitive golf after seven months with such a fabulous round. I hit it close early on and that created many opportunities for me. My iron-play was also strong and so was my putting in the latter stages.

“The highlight of my round was the 30-feet birdie conversion on the sixth. I was delighted to have scored three birdies on the last four holes. That gave me a solid foundation to build on. Putting will be the key this week since this is comparatively shorter course.”

Vikrant Chopra, one of the most consistent performers on the PGTI who has not enjoyed much success in the 2017 season so far, made his presence felt with a 62 at the Rambagh Golf Club on Wednesday.

Vikrant’s mammoth 60-feet birdie conversion on the third set off a run of five birdies for him on the front-nine. He then nailed birdies on all three par-5s on the back-nine. Chopra produced a terrific chip-in from the edge on the 18th that helped him join Ashok at the top of the leaderboard.

Chopra said, “This is a good comeback of sorts for me as I had no birdies in the final round at Kensville last week. I did really well on the par-5s today, making birdies in three of the four par-5s.

“I felt I closed the round well and just in time before the weather became threatening. I was trying to save par on the last but got lucky with the chip-in from the edge. That really pumped me up.

“I’m looking ahead to a strong week here as my tee shots and putting are pretty sharp at the moment. I’ve had a quiet season so far so I’m keen to have a solid second half. The key will be to keep the ball in play as the rough is up this time at Rambagh.”

Divyanshu Bajaj, fresh from a career-best top-5 finish at the Asian Tour event in Bengaluru last month, carried forward the momentum with a top-notch 64 that featured seven birdies and a bogey. The highlights of his round were a chip-in for birdie from the rough on the first and two birdie conversions from 25 to 30 feet.

Delhi golfers Shamim Khan (PGTI Order of Merit leader) and Pawan Kumar were tied for fourth at five-under-65.

Delhi’s Rashid Khan, one of the pre-tournament favourites, shot an opening round of one-under-69 to be placed tied 31st.

It wasn’t a good day for the four Jaipur golfers in the fray. While Jaipur’s leading professional Vishal Singh carded a 73 to be tied 87th, Mahesh Yadav (77), Damodar Kumawat (81) and Yogendra Kumawat (86) were placed tied 115th, 124th and 126th respectively.

THEY’RE BEHEADING CHILDREN

Very few had heard of Rwanda until 800,000 people were dead. And right now in Burma, the Rohingya people are being massacred —they’re even beheading tiny children. Shockingly, the army behind the killing is supported by countries like Britain, Germany and India — let’s demand they drop support for these brutal troops to help end the slaughter!
SIGN HERE
Dear friends,
Very few had heard of Rwanda, until 800,000 people were dead. And right now in Burma, the Rohingya community is being hunted down by rampaging bands of soldiers hellbent on murder.
It’s sickening. They’re even beheading tiny children.
But here’s the craziest thing — the military behind this massacre is supported by countries like Britain, Germany and India!
Burma’s generals have spent years building these alliances. Let’s demand our governments end their support until the slaughter is stopped — when our call is huge we’ll take out ads in media at a major global summit in a few days!
Governments around the world have engaged with Burma’s military — hoping to prevent massacres like we’re seeing right now. It’s clear that policy has failed, but they have massive leverage by breaking ties with these butchers!
The Rohingya are a poverty-stricken community who are denied citizenship in Burma, and have been persecuted for years because of their darker skin and different religion. Some have taken up arms and attacked security forces. But this is all out ethnic cleansing — the worst crisis the Rohingya have ever faced. Sign now and share everywhere!
We’ve helped the Rohingya before — when thousands fled a previous crackdown and were stranded at sea, our global community donated to support rescue missions to save them. Now they need us again — more than ever. Let’s rise to their call and make sure this isn’t another Rwanda.
With hope,
Bert, Rewan, Ana Sofia, Danny, Ricken and the entire Avaaz team
