WHAT:
The consultation on “Women’s Voices from the Informal Economy” will enable participants to directly engage with women informal workers who have organized to form producer groups, collectively advocated for legal reform, and who are engaged in initiatives on social protection and financial inclusion.
Through a series of dialogues with women working in the informal economy, participants will learn first-hand about the challenges faced by women, good practices and the how collective action has empowered informal women workers.
To open the consultation, Renana Jhabvala, Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) and Member, UNHLP will brief the media along withRebecca Reichmann Tavares,Representative, UN Women India MCO; Gwen Hines, Director, International Relations, Department for International Development (DFID); and Alejandra Mora Mora, Minister for the Status of Women, Costa Rica.
The two-day consultation is structured as ‘modules’ pertaining to specific themes. Each module will include a field visit to one of SEWA’s projects in or around Ahmedabad.
The participants will include women working in the informal economy and grassroots organizers and leaders from across India. They will represent a range of occupational groups within the informal economy and will include home-based workers and street vendors.

United Nations Secretary General’s High Level Panel (UNHLP), UN Women and SEWA
Background:
Placing women’s economic empowerment at the top of the global agenda, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the first-ever UN High Level Panel (UNHLP) for Women’s Economic Empowerment earlier this year. Aimed at accelerating progress under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UNHLP will:
(a) Demonstrate leadership and commitment
(b) Highlight key areas for accelerating women’s economic empowerment
(c) Make recommendations enabling governments, businesses, civil society and development partners to work together to improve economic outcomes for women and girls.
The UNHLP members include the CEO of IKEA Switzerland, the President of Costa Rica, leaders of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank Group, UN Women, eminent gender equality champions, economics experts, academics, trade union leaders, and business and government representatives from all over the world.
The UNHLP will present its first report to the UN Secretary-General in September 2016.
