Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in UK
Chinese President Xi Jinping (C) and his wife Peng Liyuan (3rd L) arrive in London, Britain, Oct. 19, 2015, for a state visit to Britain at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Chinese President Xi Jinping & wife Peng Liyuan, arrived in London on Monday evening for a state visit to Britain at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Xi’s plane touched down at Heathrow Airport ,the couple were greeted by Viscount Hood on behalf of the Queen and also by British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond.
“China attaches great importance to growing relations with the United Kingdom,” the president said in a written statement upon arrival.”To deepen China-UK relationship is in the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples and meets the trend of the times,” he said.Xi noted that this year marks the start of the second decade of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, saying he hopes to have in-depth exchange of views with British leaders on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues.
The president said he also looks forward to meeting with people from various sectors of the British society to discuss the future of the bilateral relations and draw a “grand blueprint” for future cooperation.Prior to his visit, Xi voiced his expectations for building “golden” ties with Britain.
“I hope this will chart the course for the future growth of China-UK relations, inject new impetus in practical cooperation between our two countries in all fields and enable us to jointly usher in a ‘golden time’ for China-UK comprehensive strategic partnership,” he said in a written interview with Reuters on Sunday.
Zhou Hong, a scholar with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, thinks that Xi’s trip, during which he visits a single European nation, is very rare in China-Europe ties, and that it in some way indicates China attaches great importance to its relations with Britain, which is a major country at the core of the European Union.
Xi’s state visit, which will conclude on Friday, is the first by a Chinese president since 2005.
According to China’s foreign ministry, the Queen will host a welcome ceremony for Xi and invite him for both an informal lunch and a formal dinner.Xi will hold talks with Prime MinisterDavid Cameron and address a banquet hosted by the Lord Mayor of the City of London.Besides the capital city, Xi is also scheduled for a trip to Manchester, where the Chinese president will attend a banquet and visit research projects and local businesses.
Tony Blair, former British prime minister, said earlier that Britain is “enthusiastic” about developing the ties with China even further and making sure that next decade is a golden decade, noting that most people in Britain support a strong relationship with China.
“I expect President Xi’s visit will strengthen the relationships still further between Britain and China at the political level, at the economic level and at the people-to-people level,” Blair told Xinhua in a recent interview. Xenhua news

‘Our attack needs attention’ – Harendra Singh, Coach,
‘Our attack needs attention’ – Harendra Singh, Coach, Indian Men’s Junior Hockey Team
New Delhi, 20th October 2015: The Indian Men’s Junior Hockey team returned home late night yesterday after finishing as the runner’s up at the 5th Sultan of Johor Cup. The tournament was played at Johor Bahru, Malaysia where India lost 4-3 (2-2) to Great Britain in a nail biting penalty shootout, being levelled at 2 goals each after full time. India captain Harjeet Singh was adjudged as the Player of the Tournament, as India failed to defend the title for the third consecutive year.
“The finals were a close affair and I feel bad for the boys who lost after coming so close. It’s unfortunate that even after our goalkeeper gave us life three times in the Penalty shootout, the boys probably somewhere gave into the pressure and the title slipped away from our reach. However I think our biggest learning from the tournament has been about our need to address our attack and midfield on certain areas and I am confident we will return victorious in our forthcoming tournaments,” said Harendra Singh, Coach, Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team.
“We really tried hard, and we played a good game, but Penalty Shoot Outs are really unpredictable, but this loss really hurts. We return with a fair idea of the areas where we need to work on so that we can return victorious in our next tournaments,” said Harjeet Singh, Captain Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team
When asked about him receiving the Player of the Tournament award, he said, “It feels good to be awarded the Player of the Tournament, but winning was the most important, and while this award adds to my confidence, a loss in the final still leaves a lot to desire within the team.”
The Indian colts who earlier topped the pool standings in the league matches with 13 points, had earlier also lost to Great Britain. Sumit Kumar and Harmanpreet Singh with 3 goals each were the top scorers for India in the tournament.
