India, Singapore bilateral ties

16082014

Standard
India and Singapore have reaffirmed their commitment to elevate bilateral relations.
The two countries decided to scale up ties in key areas of investment and trade which has witnessed a huge surge from 4.2 billion dollar in 2003-04 to around 19.4 billion dollars in 2013-14.
According to a joint statement issued after the meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Singaporean counterpart K Shanmugam, the two leaders directed the officials to identify concrete projects in other areas of cooperation which include speeding up air and maritime connectivity and coastal development.
India and Singapore expressed satisfaction over cooperation in the fields of defence, security, economy and people-to-people contacts. They also agreed to adopt a proactive and forward-looking approach towards building a closer and mutually beneficial partnership.
The two leaders underscored the importance of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) signed in June 2005, as the cornerstone of economic relations.
Both Ministers hoped that the negotiations for the Second Review of the CECA will be completed expeditiously, which would send a positive signal to the business community.
Singapore became one of India’s largest foreign investors in 2013, while Singapore is one of India’s top investment destinations.

Pak PM greet Modi on Independence Day

Pak PM greet Modi on Independence Day
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif greeted his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on India’s Independence Day and wished its people prosperity.
Modi had congratulated Pakistan on its Independence Day, which comes a day before India’s Independence Day.
“Prime Minister Sharif greets Prime Minister Modi on India’s Independence Day, wishing prosperity to the people of India,” the Pakistan High Commission said.
The exchange of greetings came days after a war of words broke out following Modi’s comments that Pakistan was involved in a “proxy war” against India.
Pakistan had termed Modi’s comments as “baseless rhetoric” which was strongly criticised by External Affairs Ministry.
In a strong rebuttal, the External Affairs Ministry said terrorism was a “core concern” in its bilateral ties with Pakistan and its “tool kit” is not restricted in any manner to combat it effectively.
Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan are scheduled to meet in Islamabad on August 25

In clips uploaded on YouTube over the past few weeks, two militant Islamic groups from the south of the Philippines, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and the Abu Sayyaf rebels are giving their allegiance to the Islamic State.
Abu Misry Mama, a BIFF spokesman, confirmed to AFP by telephone Friday that a video had been uploaded Wednesday.
“We have an alliance with the Islamic State and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi,” he said referring to the jihadist group’s leader. Misry said his group had no plans to impose the strict brand of radical Islam imposed by IS in the Philippines. “But if they need our help, why not?” he said.

BIFF split from Philippines’ main Muslim group, the 12,000 strong Moro Islamic Liberation Front, in 2008. While MILF signed a peace agreement with the government of President Aquino last March, BIFF which is believed to have just a few hundred fighters, has refused peace talks, preferring to continue its decade’s long campaign to set up an Islamic State in the southern Philippines.
A spokesman for an army division based in the southern Philippines, Colonel Dickson Hermoso, described BIFF as a terrorist group which uses extortion to fund its activities, although he said he didn’t think they were sending people to Iraq or Syria.
Another video by the Abu Sayyaf rebels has also been uploaded onto YouTube showing a group of about a dozen men standing in a forest clearing with one of their most senior leaders Isnilon Hapilon mentioning the IS leader al-Baghdadi, while reading out a statement pledging their alliance to the Islamic State. Hapilon has a $5 million reward on his head by the US which has said it considers Abu Sayyaf a “foreign terror organization” and has said it carries out kidnappings, beheadings and bombings.
However, Philippine military spokesman Lieutenant-colonel Ramon Zagala has dismissed both the video clips as “propaganda,” refusing to comment on them.

Anti-govt protesters march on in Pakistan; shots fired at Imran Khan
Determined to oust Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, tens of thousands of protesters on Friday marched towards the capital in two separate convoys as clashes erupted with opposition leader Imran Khan claiming that ruling PML-N activists fired at his vehicle.
Two opposition groups, led by cricketer-turned-politician Khan and Canada-based cleric Tahirul Qadri, plan to converge on Islamabad to press Sharif to call an early election little over a year after his landslide victory in the polls.”The PML-N workers opened fire on my container (vehicle). If I was hit who could stopmy party workers from reacting,” said Khan, the chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
He urged his party workers to remain peaceful, saying if the martial law was imposed in the wake of the government’s actions his party would be blamed.
“The government is blaming us for the Gujranwala incident. It will also blame us in case martial law is imposed on such acts of the government,” Khan said.
Khan also presented video footage of PML-N workers attacking his vehicle. The footage showed PML-N workers pelting stones and shoes on his vehiclewith those on board seen ducking.
PTI spokesperson Shireen Mazari said at least eight party workers were injured in clashes in Gujranwala.
Three of them have been seriously injured and shifted to a hospital. They have suffered head injuries, she said.
Mazari alleged that Federal Commerce MinisterKhurram Dastgir’s menwere involved in the incident. Gujranwala district is the constituency of Dastgir. “Police present there did not act to stop the PML-N activists,” she alleged, adding that “we cannot give guarantee of our party workers remainingpeacefulifthey are attacked en route to Islamabad.”
The anti-government protesters of both the groups plan to stage a sit-in in Islamabad to press their claims, at the end of a “long march” — which set off on a 370-km journey to the country’s capital on Thursday.
Khan initiated his ‘Azadi March’ from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore, while Qadri launched his ‘Inqelab March’ (revolution march) from the Model Town area of the city.
Khan has already underlined his demands, saying Sharif should resign and a caretaker government should be formedfor holding a fresh general election in the country.
Qadri has also unveiled the goals of his ‘revolution’ march, saying its fundamental purpose is to restore democracy and alleviate poverty.
Khan’s convoy had reached Gujranwala, 80 kilometers from Lahore, while Qadri’s convoy had reached Jehlum, 180 kilometers from Lahore, after 25 hours of journey.

23 killed as heavy rains continue in U
Twenty-three people have been killed in rain-related incidents in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh as heavy showers wreaked havoc in the hill states even as humid conditions prevailed in most parts of north India on Friday.
Seventeen people have been killed in separate incidents of cloudburst, house collapse and landslips in Pauri, Dehradun and Pithoragarh districts of Uttarakhand, while six people died in Himachal Pradesh. The heavy rains in Uttarakhand, including in the state capital, flooded several roads cutting off nearly 250 residents of a village in Pauri district from the rest of the state and brought the water level in Ganga just half a metre down the danger mark at 340 metres at Ram Jhula in Rishikesh.
Fourteen casualties occurred in Pauri, two persons died in a landslip in Kishanpur area on the outskirts of Dehradun and one drowned in an overflowing rain-fed stream in Pithoragarh district, officials said.
While Dehradun recorded a maximum 120 mm of rainfall, Rispana, Bindal and Jakhan rivers were in spate.
In Himachal Pradesh, incessant heavy monsoon rains, mostly in parts of Hamirpur and Una, disrupted normal life leaving behind a trail of destruction. Four members of family including two minors were swept away by swirling waters of Kuhana Khud in Hamirpur, while another was buried ina landslide.
Police also recovered the body of an unidentified youth.
A two-and-a-half-year old girl went missing after she washed away by a swollen rivulet in Sainre village.
The rains triggered landslides at various places and over 200 roads were blocked due to it along with road breaches.
Bangana in Una district was wettest in the region as it recorded 160 mm of rains.
Meanwhile, pleasant winds added to the festive mood in Delhi on Independence Day as the national flag at the ramparts of the Red Fort fluttered in full glory.
With temperature remaining at comfortable levels, people thronged public places like Connaught Place and the India Gate lawns to celebrate the country’s 68th Independence Day.
The humidity hovered between 71 and 53 per cent.

He will also dedicate to the nation, Powergrid’s transmission line and launch multiple road and highway projects in Solapur.
Prime Minister Modi launch a slew of other infrastructure projects worth Rs 6,000 crore in Maharashtra in a day-long visit to the state. These include a port connectivity highway project worth Rs 1,927 crore at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai and foundation stone for a port-based multi-product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at the JNPT.He  lay foundation of four laning for the Solapur-Maharashtra/Karnataka border section on Pune-Solapur stretch of National Highway-9 (NH-9) at Solapur. Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today laid the Foundation Stone of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust Special Economic Zone, at Sheva in Navi Mumbai.
He also laid the Foundation Stone for widening of Port Connectivity Road from JNPT to the National Highway. He symbolically handed over land allotment letters to Project Affected Persons.
Addressing a large public gathering at the function site, the Prime Minister said his Government had conceived Sagarmala, an ambitious project for maritime states. This would envisage not merely port development, but port-led development which would include ports, SEZs; and rail, road, air and waterway connectivity with the hinterland, including linkages of cold storage and warehousing facilities. Noting that two-third of all global trade, and 50 percent of container trade happens through the Indian Ocean, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the ports sector. Ports can become gateways to India`s prosperity, he added.
The Prime Minister said the Government is concerned at the large number of stalled SEZ projects across the country, and a high-level team has been constituted to review the problems and resolve them at the earliest.
The Prime Minister said export promotion was the need of the hour. “Until we join manufacturers in export promotion, and unless States and Centre work together, we cannot achieve new heights in exports”, the Prime Minister said. He added that the Union Government had recently convened a meeting with States to understand bottlenecks in exports, and States would soon be given the right to form their own Export Promotion Councils. Let there be competition among States for exports, the Prime Minister said. The Government had recently done away with the requirement of renewal of shipping licenses every year, and now the license would be granted for a lifetime, Shri Narendra Modi said, praising Union Minister for Shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari for this move. He added that his Government wishes to create an environment for ease of business, and encouragement for youth.

Elaborating his theme of Come, make in India, which he mentioned during his Independence Day address, the Prime Minister said his Government will encourage foreign investment in shipbuilding.
Made in India should occupy a place in the global market, the Prime Minister said.
Shri Narendra Modi also said that this was his first public function in Maharashtra after taking over as Prime Minister and he was indeed fortunate that it is in Raigarh district, a place closely associated with the great Maratha King, Shivaji.

He dedicates the 15,000 km range INS Kolkata to the nation.
It has been constructed by the Mazagon Dockyards Limited and has been designed by the Navy’s design bureau.
The 6,800-tonne warship, will showcase a giant leap in shipbuilding technology in the country. INS Kolkata will be a part of the Kolkata Class destroyers of the Indian Navy which will include follow-on ships by the name of INS Kochi and INS Chennai respectively.
India is also building an over 40,000-tonne indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.
Modi, commissioned INS Kolkata into the Indian Navy at a glittering ceremony held today at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. Kolkata is the lead ship of the indigenously designed and constructed Kolkata-class guided missile destroyers, built by Mazagon Dock Limited, Mumbai. On his arrival, the Prime Minister was received by Admiral RK Dhowan, Chief of the Naval Staff and accorded a 100-man Guard of Honour, before embarking the ship for the commissioning ceremony, which was conducted in accordance with the traditions of IN. The function was attended by a host of senior dignitaries, from both the civilian as well as naval community. Among the VIPs present at today’s ceremony were His Excellency the Governor of Maharashtra, Shri K Sankaranarayanan, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Prithviraj Chavan, the Defence Minister Shri Arun Jaitley, the National Security Adviser Shri Ajit Kumar Doval, Members of Parliament Shri Arvind Savant and Smt Poonam Mahajan, the Defence Secretary Shri RK Mathur, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Vice Admiral Anil Chopra and the Chairman and Managing Director of Mazagon Docks Limited, Rear Admiral RK Shrawat (Retd).
On this momentous occasion the Admiral RK Dhowan welcomed the Prime Minister and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Navy. During his address The Admiral said that commissioning of INS Kolkata is a milestone in the self-reliance programme of the Navy and stressed that indigenisation of platforms, weapons, sensors and equipment, through public as well as private sectors, will continue to remain a focus area. He emphasized that the ‘Roadmap for the Navy’s expansion and growth would continue to remain firmly anchored on Self-reliance and Indigenisation’.
The Project 15A Kolkata class destroyers are follow-on of the legendary Project 15 ‘Delhi’ class destroyers which entered service in the late 1990s. Conceived and designed by Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design, the ships have been christened after major port cities of India viz. Kolkata, Kochi and Chennai. The keel of Kolkata was laid on 26 Sep 03 and the ship was launched on 30 Mar 06. Regarded as the most potent warship to have been constructed in India yet, this magnificent ship measures 164 meters in length and approximately 18 meters in width and has a full load displacement of 7400 tonnes. The ship has a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion system, consisting of four powerful reversible gas turbines and can attain speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship’s electric power is provided by four gas turbine generators and one diesel alternator, which together produce 4.5 Mega-Watts of electrical power, enough to light up a small town. The ship has a complement of 30 officers and 300 sailors.
INS Kolkata incorporates new design concepts for stealth and has many firsts to her credit, including a very large indigenous combat component. The ship is packed with the most sophisticated state-of-the-art weapons and sensors including the vertically launched Long Range Surface to Air Missiles (LRSAM) coupled with the MF-STAR multi-function active phased array radar, which is fitted for the first time on an Indian Naval ship. She is equipped with advanced supersonic and long range BrahMos Surface to Surface Missiles – a joint Indo-Russian venture. The 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) and AK 630 CIWS, both manufactured indigenously, can take on air and surface targets. The entire anti-submarine weapon and sensor suite fitted onboard, consisting of Indigenous Rocket Launchers (IRL), Indigenous Twin-tube Torpedo Launchers (ITTL) and a bow-mounted New Generation HUMSA Sonar are a fine example of our indigenous efforts in the field of underwater warfare. The sensor suite includes other advanced surface and air surveillance radars and an indigenous Electronic Warfare system. A state-of-the-art Combat Management System (CMS-15A) has been integrated with the onboard weapons and sensors. The ship is equipped to operate two Seaking or Chetak helicopters.
The ship can be truly classified as a ‘Network of Networks’ as it is equipped with sophisticated digital networks, such as ATM based Integrated Ship Data Network (AISDN), Auxiliary Control System (ACS), Automatic Power Management System (APMS) and Combat Management System (CMS). The AISDN is the information highway on which data from all the sensors and weapons ride. Whilst remote control and monitoring of machinery is achieved through ACS, the intricate power supply management is done using APMS. The CMS is used to integrate information from own data sources and collate information from other platforms using indigenous data-link system, to provide maritime domain awareness.
The unique feature of this ship is the high level of indigenisation achieved with most of the systems onboard sourced from within the country which has generated a sound vendor base for future ships. Some of the major indigenised equipment/ systems onboard INS Kolkata include Combat Management System (CMS), Auxiliary Control System (ACS), Automatic Power Management System (APMS), Foldable Hangar Doors, Helo Traversing System and bow mounted HUMSA NG system. Crew comfort is a significant feature of INS Kolkata and has been ensured through ergonomically designed accommodation and galley compartments on modular concept.
The ship derives her name from the cultural capital city of India and state capital of Bengal – Kolkata – `The City of Joy`. The crest of the ship depicts the `Howrah Bridge` in the background and a leaping `Bengal Tiger` in the foreground, both symbolic of the city of Kolkata, riding above blue and white ocean waves. The crew of the ship abides by the Sanskrit motto on the crest “Yudhay Sarvasannadh” which means “Always Prepared for Battle”.
The Commanding Officer, Captain Tarun Sobti, read out the Commissioning Warrant, prior to the hoisting of ‘Colours’ (the national flag and naval ensign) for the first time in the life of the ship. Following her commissioning, INS Kolkata will be placed under the operational and administrative control of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command. On completion of some additional sea trials of ship-borne systems, she will be assigned to the Western Fleet and would be home-ported at Mumbai.

An Invite to Narmada Valley

16082014

to support the truth and expose the myth..!
to stand up for rights and lives…!

Dear Friends,
You must have read about the decision taken by the Narendra Modi led NDA government to raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam. While there are thousands of families in the 177 villages of Madhya Pradesh alone and hundreds of families in the adivasi villages of Maharashtra and Gujarat who are “affected at 122 meters-the present height of the Dam”, the Union and the state government can’t carry further construction at the dam ! This being the legal position and the mandate of ‘No submergence without full rehabilitation of any family’ as well as compliance on environmental conditions, the decision is illegal! It is in violation of the Narmada Tribunal Award and many judgements.
The NDA Government is taking resort to certain decisions by official bodies, but with false claims like “All project-affected are rehabilitated”, “back water levels are changed and hence there will be no additional submergence”, that the “17 meters high gates will be erected but kept open”… etc.  The decision is made without taking cognizance of the massive corruption in rehabilitation, with the enquiry on.…indicating no rehabilitation of thousands.
The villages with pucca houses, shops, schools, temples, mosques…green fields with best of agriculture and horticulture, need to be visited and seen to believe….and to say NO to Submergence without rehabilitation and hence to raising the Dam further when no alternative land and livelihood is offered to thousands of farmers, fish-workers, potters, labourers.
The undemocratic and illegal push to this project is to intimidate those who have struggled for last 29 years for their rights, exposing the untruth and destruction to corruption, illegalities and irregularities. Adivasis without alternative land…fishworkers without right to fisheries ( except in Maharashtra)… farmers cheated with fake registries….will have to face the challenge, but only with your support.
We, therefore, invite you to the Narmada Valley to meet the people, visit the villages and a township.…to assess the reality versus fake claims.
Supporters from across India are earnestly requested to be with us on 23rd- 24th -25th of August. There will also be a mass rally on one day in Badwani, and visit to hilly adivasi community, to be marched by boat….There will also be a meeting to discuss and decide.
Do reach Badwani on 22nd evening onwards or 23rd early morning, via Indore/Khandwa/Dhule/Baroda… and plan to return from Baroda on the 25th night. On 23rd, we will start from Khalghat, Mumbai Agra Road at 10 a.am.
It is critical time….an enormous challenge and your support will be the most valuable. Do confirm by a letter, e-mail or phone at the earliest.
