Istanbul police uses tear gas on pro-Palestinian protesters at Israel consulate

Anti-Israeli protesters at a rally for the Palestinian victims of the Gaza onslaught were fired upon with tear gas by Turkish riot police in Istanbul on Friday, Reuters reports. The crowd had gathered at the Israeli consulate in the Turkish capital with stones in protest at the ground offensive, who has now claimed upwards of two dozen Palestinian lives. The protesters waved Turkish and Palestinian flags, chanting slogans. They started to smash up windows with sticks and rocks, before the police decided to intervene.

Libyan militias agree truce, hand over airport to neutral forces

Libyan capital Tripoli, one of the hottest battle zones in the Middle East region, is seeing a truce take place between two powerful militant groups, which have been fighting for control of its airport. The news comes after Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdelaziz appealed to the UN Security Council to provide experts in order to train the country’s security and defense forces for the purpose of defending strategic objects, oil fields and airports, AFP reports. Clashes between rival gangs have been on the rise in Libya in the last months, prompting fears of a full-scale civil war. The truce has been agreed in concert with the capital’s mayor, and a decision was made to hand over the airport to neutral forces.

A woman from Texas has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after sending US President Barack Obama and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg letters laced with highly toxic ricin. Thirty-six-year-old Shannon Guess Richardson was sentenced Wednesday after having pleaded guilty in December to possessing and producing a biological toxin. Richardson had sent three letters from New Boston, Texas, outside Texarkana, before contacting the police and claiming her husband did it.

Iran nuclear talks to be adjourned before deadline expires – diplomats

The talks between Iran and P5+1, a group of six world leading nations, over the Iranian nuclear program are to be adjourned on Friday, two days ahead of the informal deadline set for them, diplomatic sources told AP. Keeping the talks until the last hour despite no hope of bridging the gaps would give the impression of a desperate search for a solution, something the parties would like to avoid, the sources said. The deadline is likely to be extended

Typhoon Rammasun leaves Philippines battered, moves towards China

Russia not planning reopening Soviet spy base on Cuba – Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has refuted reports that Russia and Cuba agreed to resume work at the Soviet-built intelligence facility in Lourdes near Havana, Cuba. “No, it’s not true,” Putin answered a question during his meeting with reporters following the BRICS summit in Brazil. “There is nothing to regret, we are capable of solving the challenges in the field of national defense without this component, there is nothing unusual here, we in agreement with our friends closed the work of this center, we have no plans to resume work,” said Putin. Reports of resumption of work at the USSR’s largest electronic intelligence facility were published in Kommersant newspaper on Wednesday.

Suspected militant attack reported on Kabul airport

A number of explosions, possibly rocket propelled grenades, and bursts of gunfire were reported near Kabul International Airport at dawn on Thursday, according to eyewitness reports cited by Reuters. The Afghan capital’s airport, which is used both by civilians and the country’s military, serves as a base for NATO-led forces who have been clashing with Taliban and Islamic insurgents for well over a decade. Rockets are fired into the airport’s vicinity almost on a weekly basis, though the facility has largely escaped damage. It was unclear whether Thursday’s attack represented a more serious, frontal assault attempt. Officials reported that a number of militants had burst into a building north of the airport, and the transport hub had been closed to all flights.

Taliban attack in Kabul Airport ends after all gunmen killed

The Taliban attack in Kabul International Airport in the capital of Afghanistan has ended after all the militants were killed, Gul Agha Hashimi, a senior police official, told AFP. The assault lasted at least four hours. Earlier, the Afghan officials confirmed that the gunmen seized two buildings under-construction, only 700 meters from the airport. They used them as a site to fire rockets and gunfire targeting both the airport and ISAF (NATO’s International Security Assistance Force) jet fighters flying over Kabul, said Aman. The airport, which is used both by civilians and the country’s military, serves as a base for ISAF, which has have been clashing with Taliban and Islamic insurgents for well over a decade.

HIV transmissions highest in 20 years in Australia

There were 1,235 new cases of HIV diagnosed in Australia in 2013, the largest number in 20 years, an annual report by the University of New South Wales’ Kirby Institute said. The rates have been stable for the past few years, but are 70 percent higher than they were back in 1999, when new diagnoses were at their lowest. The spread of the deadly disease is due to rise in unprotected sex, particularly among gay men, rather than better testing, evidence suggested.

Israel launches ground attack in Gaza

18072014

Benjamin Netanyahu initiated a ground attack  escalation in a ten-day offensive  killed more than 250 Palestinians.
Witnesses in Gaza reported heavy bombing from jets, warships and artillery stationed along the border late on Thursday, with much of the firing directed at northern Gaza.Electricity was cut off across a large swathe of the strip, though it was unclear why. Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman, said: “The military objectives are twofold. “To strike Hamas as a terrorist organisation, which is globally labelled, so that they do not have the motivation to continue this aggression against Israel. “And second of all to strike the terrorist infrastructure, the rockets, the tunnels, the mechanisms that they are using to strike and attack Israel.”
An Israeli military spokesman said in an interview to a radio station regarding the recent death of an Israeli soldier during the ground offensive on Gaza: “We are checking the circumstances” of soldier’s death.
This was the first Israeli casualty since the start of the operation.
Palestinian officials said 19 Palestinians were killed in heavy fighting overnight, bringing the death toll to 259, including 39 children. More than 1,900 Palestinians have also been injured. The Israeli military said that one soldier was killed in the north of Gaza on Friday, but the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear. One Israeli was killed by rocket fire from Gaza earlier this week.
Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum said that the ground operation amounted to “stupidity” and that the Israeli army would “pay a high price”. Sami Abu Zuhri, another spokesman for the group which controls Gaza, said: “It does not scare the Hamas leaders or the Palestinian people. We warn Netanyahu of the dreadful consequences of such a foolish act.”  Diana Buttu, a former legal adviser to the Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, said: “I think it’s high time that the Palestinian Authority go and sign on to the International Criminal Court and start charging Israel with war crimes. This isn’t the first time this has happened.” “They [Israel] shouldn’t be allowed to behave like they are above the law, and treat Palestinians like they are beneath it.”

Recently the rains played spoil sport on the sets of Star Plus’;s Ye Hai Mohabbatein. Divyanka Tripathi who plays Ishita Raman Bhalla on the show was in for a rude shock when she found the ceiling of her green room leaking due to heavy showers. Divyanka who reported to the sets to shoot for a very crucial scene found her green room flooded and all the costumes for the show and her expensive make-up and laptop floating in the room.

Being a thorough professional Divyanka shifted her belongings to a safe area and changed into her get up so that the shoot is not disrupted.

“It was pouring the previous night as a result the ceiling gave away and started leaking. Since the door was locked-up and we had packed up no one realized that the room was flooded until the next day when I reported on the sets. My laptop, clothes for the shoot and other personal belongings were damaged. However we were shooting for a very crucial scene and we couldn’;t afford to cancel the shoot, hence, I changed and resumed with the shots.” said our very professional Divyanka Tripathi.
