Rahul seeks to enthuse demoralised cadres; targets Modi
Anointed the campaign chief, a combative Rahul Gandhi sought to enthuse the demoralised Congress cadre for the Lok Sabha polls and attacked Narendra Modi over his ‘Congress-free India’ pitch and “divisive” politics.
At the day-long AICC session in New Delhi, Rahul and Sonia Gandhi targeted BJP, with the Congress President saying the country was facing the “biggest threat” from “communal forces and their ideology” which cannot be tolerated. In his 45-minute spirited address, which was repeatedly cheered by delegates from across the country, he sought to widen the party’s reach as he asserted that he would fight for the cause of the youth, women, downtrodden sections and a new constituency of people who have risen above the poverty line and are aspiring to be part of the middle class.
He gave indications of changing the style of functioning in the party, which he had promised after the drubbing in Assembly polls, by ensuring larger participation of people, including women in decision-making like candidate selection.
He said tickets will not be given to party hoppers but to those who have “Congress in their blood” and candidates for 15 Lok Sabha seats will be chosen on the basis of feedback from local units, an experiment which will be expanded if it works.
Acknowledging that Congress has a “tough battle” ahead, Rahul said, “This is not just another turn in the history of India, another election to be fought, won or lost. This is a turning point in our nation’s journey.
Giving a battle cry for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Rahul said the Congress is ready for the tough challenge ahead and “we will not stop till the battle is won”.
In a bid to lift the morale of the cadre, he said howsoever dark the night may be and tough the battle may be, the Congress will go in as “warrior” with “head high” and “not lose courage.”
Tearing into BJP and its PM candidate Modi for his ‘Congress-free India’ campaign, he said Congress is a “thought” which cannot be erased. “Whoever has tried to do it, has himself got destroyed”.
Sonia Gandhi asked the party workers not to lose heart after the recent drubbing in assembly elections, saying victory and defeat are inescapable in politics and Congress always has the resilience to bounce back by fighting the challenges strongly.
“Congress has faced many difficult times in the past, much tougher than today, but we have never lost heart,” he said.
Rahul and Sonia Gandhi also put an end to the debate over projecting him as the Prime Ministerial candidate, saying the party has the tradition of PM being elected by the MPs.
In a bid to lift the morale of the cadre, he said however dark the night may be and tough the battle may be, the Congress will go in as “warrior” with “head high” and “not lose courage.”
Rahul articulated worries over the issues of corruption and price rise and said the Congress and the Manmohan Singh government is determined to address these.
In a virtual directive, Rahul asked the government to raise the annual cap of subsidised LPG cylinders from 9 to 12, a point that was lustily cheered by the audience.
Oil and Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily immediately announced that the issue will go to the Cabinet and a decision will be taken to implement it.

Sunanda’s death unnatural: Doctors

Sunanda
Doctors at AIIMS, who conducted autopsy on the body of Sunanda Pushkar, on Saturday, said it was a case of “sudden, unnatural death” but ruled out poisoning even as police investigated various angles into death of Union Minister Shashi Tharoor’s wife.
Injury marks were also found on the body of 52-year-old Pushkar, who was Friday night found dead in mysterious circumstances in luxury Leela Palace hotel in South Delhi.
The head of the three-member panel of doctors that conducted the autopsy on Pushkar, said, “We have conducted the postmortem examination… It is a case of sudden, unnatural death” but ruled out poisoning. However, he said the team has preserved certain “biological samples for toxicological analysis as well as visco-pathological examination.”
“We have completed the whole procedure. Samples for toxicological analysis means ruling out any poison. Some pathology of the heart has been preserved by us,” he said on Saturday.
Pushkar was found dead in her suite at the hotel and the body was shifted to AIIMS at around 3:30 AM for post-mortem.
Police is also expected to record statement of Tharoor, who was admitted to AIIMS following complaints of chest pain and was discharged later.
Pushkar and Tharoor were at the centre of a raging controversy when reports emerged that she was upset over reported text and tweet messages between her husband and Mehr Tarar, a Pakistani journalist.
Gupta, who is Head of Forensic Sciences Department at AIIMS, said the autopsy report would focus on investigating from a medical angle the sudden unnatural death.
He said the final autopsy report will be prepared within next couple of days after receiving reports of toxicological analysis and visco-pathological examination.
“After receiving all these reports in the next couple of days, we will finalise the postmortem report and we will give our opinion in the case,” he said.
When asked about the injuries on the body, he refused to give details saying as police was working on the case, certain issues cannot be revealed.
“There were certain injuries on the body. I cannot reveal the details of the injury. Basically in medico-legal cases, the number of injuries does not matter. Whether these injuries were related to fatality or not matters,” he said.
Asked whether the injury caused death, he refused to give a direct answer.
Pushkar and Tharoor had checked into the hotel on Thursday as their home was being painted.
A joint statement from the couple on Thursday said that they were “happily married” but distressed by “some unauthorised tweets”.
Pushkar had accused Tarar of stalking her husband and trying to break her marriage when she was away for medical treatment.
She had told a couple of newspapers that she was considering divorce from Tharoor in the wake of the alleged extra-marital affair.
The Pakistani journalist rubbished the charges of having any relationship with Tharoor.

BJP hits back at Congress
BJP hits back at Congress
BJP chief Rajnath Singh on Saturday accused the Congress of practising politics of dividing people along religious lines.
Singh also criticised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his remarks that it would be disastrous if Narendra Modi became the PM, and said that it was his tenure which had been a disaster while Gujarat had become a model state under Modi.
He further added that it was Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, from her government, who spoke about “Hindu terror”.
Gandhi had in her speech at AICC meet on Friday said that opposition BJP’s ideology is divisive and communal.
Addressing party members in New Delhi on Saturday, Singh said that Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was trying to appropriate credit for passage of Lokpal Bill though the legislation owed its existence to the efforts of social activist Anna Hazare and BJP leaders had also put pressure on the government.
The BJP president said that the Congress-led UPA government had failed to live-up to people’s expectations and the economy is in shambles.
“The governments provided by Narendra Modi in Gujarat, Shivraj Singh Chauhan in Madhya Pradesh and Raman Singh in Chhattisgarh have put a question mark over the Congress’ future in these states. The Congress fears that a strong government under Modi could do the same at the national level,” he said.
BJP wary of AAP-Cong tag team, meet discusses poll strategy
BJP is now clearly wary of the Aam Admi Party with the party’s national executive on Friday discussing ways to counter the challenge posed by it along with Congress in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Though BJP President Rajnath Singh refrained from naming AAP, he alluded to how Congress may use the growing clout of Arvind Kejriwal’s organisation to spoil their march to victory.
Speaking at the BJP National Executive in New Delhi on Friday, party president Rajnath Singh said there is growing antagonism against the Congress mainly due to malgovernance, indecisiveness and corruption in the UPA government.
“Congress can see the writing on the wall and knows that defeat is writ large there. Congress is losing the elections and hence is trying to ensure that BJP does not get a clear majority. It is making every effort to stop the BJP’s march to success,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters, quoting Singh.
The BJP Chief said since Congress is aware it is going to lose the polls, it is now trying every trick in the book to ensure that a “majboor (weak)” government is formed at the Centre.
Though Singh did not name Aam Admi Party, whose growing clout is a matter of concern for the BJP, party sources said he was making a veiled reference to it.
Congress is supporting the AAP government in Delhi and BJP has often alleged that the latter is the B-team of the former.
BJP is also concerned about Congress encouraging the non-UPA, non-NDA parties to keep the saffron party from forming a government in case of a hung Parliament.
Rajnath Singh also referred to the issue of secularism, a matter on which Congress has targeted it often, and said many forces want India to be a weak state.
“The party president gave the assurance that BJP-led NDA will form a government which will not only be strong on economics and ethics but will also never compromise on the issue of nationalism,” Javadekar said.
Singh described UPA government as an NPA-non-performing asset- and said it is time to write it off.
“He said India attained Swarajya (independence) in 1947 but now it is time for Purna Swarajya (full independence) by making the country free of corruption and unemployment,” Javadekar said.
In his speech, Rajnath Singh claimed that people will give a decisive mandate to BJP and NDA will form a government at the Centre.
He congratulated Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh for their victory in the Assembly polls.
He also praised Vasundhara Raje for leading BJP to an unprecedented victory in Rajasthan and Harsh Vardhan for helping the party emerge as the largest in Delhi Assembly polls.
“After the Goa conclave (where Narendra Modi was declared the BJP Campaign Committee Chief) not only the weather but also the attitude of the people has also changed,” Singh, said.
At the on-going national Executive meet, BJP will give final touches to its resolutions on the political and economic situation in the country.
These two resolutions will be passed at the two-day national council beginning Saturday.
State units will also present reports on their state of preparedness for the Lok Sabha elections and formation of booth level committees.
This being the last conclave before the general elections, the party will also set its roadmap for the battle ahead, sources said
