Turkey may remove headscarf ban in public institutions as part of ‘democratization package’

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will reveal the details of a democratization package in Ankara on Monday. The package is expected to allow women with headscarves to provide public services, and men will also be granted more flexibility in their dress code and permission to grow beards, Hurriyet Daily News reported. Political parties would be able to campaign in languages other than Turkish. Private schools will be able to provide Kurdish and Arabic as elective courses to students upon demand. Letters such as “q,” “w” and “x” – which are used in Kurdish – will now be allowed in education and public services.
