		Dear Friends, After the successful opening of the most anticipated exhibition of the season, "AMRITA SHER-GIL – THE MAGYAR CONNECTION" we shall present a photo exhibition by eminent Hungarian Lithuanian photo artist Paulius Normatas who captures the gypsies from both India and Hungary. The concert tour by the world acclaimed HAYDN BARYTONTRIO BUDAPEST shall charm the music lovers in Delhi, Pune, Goa and Bangalore. In April, we shall have the concert tour of the KODÁLY STRING QUARTET who will play along with pianist Marouan Benabdallah in Delhi, Gurgaon, Pune, Mumbai and Goa. We also bring prize winning photographer, László Berta's photo exhibition capturing the wild in Hungary and the Indian subcontinent. Not to forget the exciting workshop for our young budding artists, who shall paint Easter eggs in the tradition Hungarian style. Balassi Institute Hungarian Information & Cultural Centre New Delhi Literary evening at HICC March 04 Mon, 6:00 pm WOMAN'S ROLE AND DESTINY IN MAGDA SZABÓ'S WORKS Lecture by Dr. Edit V. Gilbert Edit V. Gilbert, Ph.D, dr. habil, Associate Professor at University of Pécs on Department of Literary Theory and Modern Literature M.A. in Russian and Hungarian at the University of Szeged, leads courses on 20th century world literature, mainly Russian and Hungarian novels and their comparative analysis. She published and edited books (Ways to Master and Margarita by M. Bulgakov), one of Hungarian translators of Lyudmila Ulitskaya's works. Her most recent research interest is bibliotheraphy. Her current project is: From Periphery to Centre: www.pecsdecentrum.extra.hu. This project examines the different literary and cultural trends of 16 countries/language areas prevailing in the second half of the 20th century, starting from the "Russian story". The current lecture analyzes the novels and the life of the famous and important Hungarian writer Magda Szabó. Exhibition at HICC March 5-22 Inauguration on Mar 5 at 6 pm WITH A WANDERING LENS Gypsies in India and Hungary Photo exhibition by Hungarian–Lithuanian photo artist Paulius Normantas The exhibition forms a unique sync of the gypsies in Hungary and India showcasing the similarities yet the distinctions in them. Depicting the wandering life-style of the Gypsy tribes of Rajasthan with beauty, dignity and intense emotions, while giving a more factual ethnographical 'report' on the already settled Hungarian Gypsy community of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county is the main characteristics of Normantas' photographs. One can see the two groups of pictures as a comparative study through the lens of this wandering photographer. Exhibition at HICC lawns March 10-April 10 METAL BREATHES LIFE Sculptures by B. S. Chauhan Creativity is a part of the artist's life. He sketches his ideas every day. He is an artist, inventor and a sculptor. His sketch-book is full of designs which look more like art. B. S. Chauhan, the sculptor, has a very creative mind, full of ideas and way beyond the present. Steel is the form of his creative expression which transcends all human limits. His quest is cosmic and exponential, yet earthy and natural. Fábri Film Club at HICC March 14 Thursday 6:00 pm THE BRIDGEMAN (A HÍDEMBER) Hungarian film, directed by Géza Bereményi (2002), colour, duration: 145 minutes The story of the film takes place between 1820 and 1860 set against the Habsburg Monarchy, and portrays the life of a Hungarian aristocrat, who was born with extra-ordinary mental and spiritual talents and into a wealthy background. In the years following the fall of Napoleon the young count Széchenyi irresponsibly seduces his brother's wife, and the consequent scandal ruins his career as an officer. The sudden death of the humiliated woman brings a drastic change in the character of the formerly shallow young man, who after this event becomes obsessed with responsibility, and seeks to conquer his fate by creating great works. Petőfi Book Club at HICC March 15 Friday 5:00 pm HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION OF 1848 15th of March - the anniversary of the Revolution's outbreak Presentation by Dr. Ágnes Kirpalani The Hungarian Revolution of 1848 was one of many of the European Revolutions of 1848 and closely linked to other revolutions of 1848 in the Habsburg areas. The revolution in the Kingdom of Hungary grew into a war for independence from the Austrian Empire, ruled by the Habsburg monarchy. Many of its leaders and participants, including Lajos Kossuth, István Széchenyi, Sándor Petőfi, József Bem, are among the most respected national heroes in Hungarian history. Concert Tour Neemrana, Delhi, Pune, Goa and Bangalore March 18– March 28 HAYDN BARYTONTRIO BUDAPEST – INDIA TOUR The HAYDN BARYTONTRIO BUDAPEST was founded by Balázs Kakuk in 1980 with the intention to revive Joseph Haydn's almost 200 compositions for baryton - an original instrument of Prince Esterházy Miklós, the Magnificent - in order to perform the pieces in authentic and original instrumentation. The Ensemble plays all Barytontrios from Haydn as well as quintets, octets and the barytondivertimenti from other composers of the Esterházy circle. Film music records, TV-production's, concert tours worldwide.The members of the trio include Balázs Kakuk, József Spengler and András Kaszanyitzky. She has had the privilege of displaying her works in places abroad like London, Berlin, Slovakia, Prague, Vienna and Oman. Her vision and understanding set her on a different platform where her creation portrays the depth of her talent by exploring the hidden. "As a painter, I feel delighted to provide my bit of contribution in this vast and wonderful world of art," quotes Arshi Ahmed. Concert Tour Gurgaon, Delhi, Pune, Mumbai and Goa April 3-12 KODÁLY STRING QUARTET AND MAROUAN BENABDALLAH (PIANO) INDIA TOUR The Kodály String Quartet, formed in Budapest in 1966, has continued to exemplify the greatest standards of the rich Hungarian musical tradition which it has carried on with such extraordinary distinction throughout the world over four decades of international appearances. International critics have been lavish with remarkable acclaim for the Kodály Quartet's numerous (over 50) recordings, including the monumental undertaking of the complete cycles of Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert for Naxos. The members of the quartet are Attila Falvay (violin), Erika Tóth (violin), János Fejérvári (viola) and György Éder (violoncello). The Kodály String Quartet will play along with Marouan Benabdallah. Not yet thirty-three, acclaimed pianist Marouan Benabdallah is indisputably the leading representative of his native Morocco on the international concert stage, having recently performed debut recitals at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Aspen Music Festival, Teatro Colon with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, the Castleton Festival Orchestra under the baton of Lorin Maazel. With a musical heritage deeply rooted in the Hungarian tradition, Mr. Benabdallah Marouan received his formal training at the Béla Bartók Conservatory and the Ferenc Liszt Academy in Budapest, and in 2008, was presented with the Medal of the Hungarian Parliament for his achievement in music – an honor he shares with such artists as Placido Domingo, José Cura and others. It seems that that town has a special atmosphere what inspired people by visual arts because numerous acknowledged photographer were born there. Maybe the vivid cultural life influenced him from his early age when he began to learn photography and as a student he took pictures passionately. Due to his passion for nature, persistence and outstanding artistic quality he was admitted to Hungary's most dignified nature photographer organization, naturArt in 2000 and he became member of the board in 2004; he is now the vice president of naturArt. He has had several individual and collective exhibitions both in Hungary and abroad like Belgium, Germany, Italy, India and Sri Lanka. His most successful individual exhibitions are: Observed moments, As I saw, Faces of Asia, and Those wonderful birds. His pictures were awarded many times by the Hungarian "The nature photographer of the year", OTP Travel & National Geographic, AVES 2004 in Namur, Belgium, Belgian Nature Photo Expo, but he is most proud of his win in Sri Lanka in 2004 when he won the Sri Lankan nature photographer competition and was elected for the nature photographer of the year in Sri Lanka. Egg painting workshop at HICC April 11, Thursday 9:30 am onwards EASTER DELIGHT Painting eggs is a Hungarian folk tradition during Easter related to the revival of nature at spring time. The Hungarian Centre celebrates the joy of Easter with a workshop for school children to paint Easter eggs. During the workshop, the young and talented artists would learn different techniques of painting eggs. Literary evening at HICC April 15 Monday 6:00 pm DAY OF HUNGARIAN POETRY Sándor Weöres Sándor Weöres (1913-1989) is a poet of enormous range and virtuosity. He was recognized as a poet in his infancy and his poetry was published by Nyugat, the greatest Hungarian literary journal when he was fifteen. He was a prolific translator of Chinese, Assyrian, Sumerian and Sanskrit poetry among other literatures. On his hundredth birth anniversary we remember him with readings from his poetry, excerpts of literary essays and his drama The Beast with Two Heads. Fábri Film Club at HICC April 18 Thursday 6:00 pm THE DOOR (Az ajtó) Hungarian film, directed by István Szabó (2012), colour, duration: 98 minutes Magda, a female writer struggling for success, employs an elderly woman called Emerence to be her housekeeper. From their first encounter, it is clear that Emerence is no ordinary maid. Although everyone in the neighbourhood knows and respects her, no one knows anything about her private life or has ever been allowed to enter her home. However, a dramatic event in the writer's life prompts Emerence to unveil glimpses of her traumatic past – a past which sheds light on her very peculiar behaviour. The Door brilliantly illustrates the bond as it develops between these two very different women and, ultimately, the tragic end of their relationship.
