Miss China crowned Miss World 2012, Vanya reaches top 7

Miss China crowned Miss World 2012, Vanya reaches top 7

China’s Wen Xia Yu was on Saturday crowned Miss World 2012 while India’s contender Vanya Mishra could only make it to the top seven.

This is the second time MissChina has been awarded the title.

Last year’s Miss World Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela handed over her crown to Wen at a glittering ceremony held in Dongsheng Fitness Center Stadium.

The 23-year-old Wen is a music student who says she wants to become a music teacher, Chinese media reported.

Wales’ Sophie Moulds was the first runner-up, while Australia’s Jessica Kahawaty was the second runner-up.

Though Mishra didn’t make it beyond top seven, she did bag the titles of ‘Miss Social Media’ and ‘Beauty with a Purpose’.

Her dance to the track ‘Dil cheez kya hai’ from the 1981 film “Umrao Jaan” in the semi-finals gave her a place among the top seven finalists.

Mishra was being touted as one of the probable winners and was expected to bring back the title home after a gap of more than a decade.

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra last won the title for Indiain 2000.

During the final round, the contestants were asked ‘Why they deserved to be the next Miss World’ to which Vanya answered, “I believe that the next Miss World should be a woman with a kind heart and humility, who wherever she goes, makes people feel that she is their own.”

“Somebody who carries simple values in this complex world, somebody who believes in herself. And this is what I believe I am.”

Minister among ’32 dead’ in Sudan plane crash

A Sudanese cabinet minister was among 32 people killed on Sunday when an airplane crashed as it carried a delegation to war-torn South Kordofan state for Eid celebrations.

Among the dead was Khartoum’s Guidance and Endowments Minister Ghazi Al-Saddiq.

26 people and six crew were aboard the aircraft.

The plane crashed into a hill because of bad weather, killing the entire delegation.

The Russia-made Antonov plane was landing in Talodi town at about 8am when an explosion was heard and the plane was destroyed.

The town of Talodi, about 50 kilometres from the disputed border with South Sudan, sits on a partly-forested plain beneath craggy hills. Heavy rains have been reported in South Kordofan recently.

Julian Assange addresses his supporters

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has called on President Barack Obama to end a “witch hunt” against his secret-spilling website, after appearing in public for the first time since he took refuge inside Ecuador’s embassy in London two months ago.

“I ask President Obama to do the right thing, the United States must renounce its witch-hunt against WikiLeaks,” Assange said.

“The US war on whistle-blowers must end. There must be no more foolish talk about prosecuting any media organisation, be it Wikileaks or the New York Times,” the 41-year-old hacker- turned activist said.

Citing examples of alleged action in various countries against freedom of expression, Assange drew loud applause from over 200 supporters as he said, “There is unity in the oppression. There must be absolute unity and determination in the response”.

Clad in a crisp blue shirt and red tie, Assange appeared in the balcony of the embassy’s ground floor flat with nearly 100 police officers and a police helicopter above closely watching every movement.

Technically, he remained within Ecuador territory, which prevented police officers from arresting him.

Assange, an Australian national, began by thanking the people and government of Ecuador, and those in the government in the US and UK who “are still fighting for justice”.

He has been granted diplomatic asylum by Ecuador while Britain insists it is committed to extradite him to Sweden to face allegations of sex offences, and will not give him safe passage.

Assange stood beside Ecuador’s flag as several of his supporters and journalists from across the globe assembled outside the embassy, including the left-wing writer Tariq Ali.

Assange was greeted by supporters at almost every sentence. He told his supporters, many of whom had been camping overnight for days outside the embassy, “I am here today because I cannot be there with you today. But thank you for your resolve, for your generosity of spirit”.

“On Wednesday night after a threat was made on this embassy and police descended on this embassy, you came out to watch over it.”

“The US must dissolve its FBI investigation. The United States must vow that it will not seek to prosecute our staff or our supporters,” he said.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest yesterday said the Obama administration considers Assange a matter for the governments of Britain, Sweden and Ecuador to resolve.

Assange also asked the US to release Bradley Manning, charged with leaking classified information to WikiLeaks.
“If Bradley Manning really did as he is accused, he is a hero, an example to us all, and one of the world’s foremost political prisoners,” he said.
Assange angered the US in 2010 when his WikiLeaks website began publishing a huge trove of American diplomatic and military secrets, including 250,000 US embassy documents that highlight the sensitive, candid and often embarrassing backroom dealings of American diplomats.
Assange said that he could hear police “storming” up through the internal fire escapes of the embassy.
He added, “If the UK did not throw away the terms of the Vienna convention it was because the world was watching and the world was watching because you were watching.”
Assange, who went into the embassy on June 19, today completed two months amidst a growing diplomatic impasse between Britain and Ecuador over his extradition to Sweden to face allegations of sexual offences.

  Hello –Tom…

The White House, Washington

 Hello –
Tomorrow is going to be a special day at the White House, and I wanted to make sure you got a chance to be a part of it.
At lunchtime, 54 kids from all over the United States will join me in the East Room for the first-ever Kids’ State Dinner.
Each of these young people worked with their parents to create an original lunch recipe. We asked them to design a dish that was healthy, affordable, and tasty – and which met the nutritional guidelines set up by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A panel of judges from the groups who partnered with us on this project – the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Education, and Epicurious — chose these 54 recipes as their favorites.
So now, the kid chefs and their parents are on their way to the White House, and tomorrow we’ll all enjoy a meal together and take in a musical performance from Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush. You can watch the whole thing as it happens on our website — will you join us tomorrow?
As a mom, I know that parents are always looking for new ideas to make sure our kids are eating right and staying healthy. That’s part of why we launched the Let’s Move! initiative.
And it’s why we’re working with the Department of Education and Epicurious to share a free printable and downloadable cookbook with the winning recipes that these young people created with their parents.
You can learn more about our work to solve the problem of childhood obesity so that all our kids can grow up healthy at LetsMove.gov.
And tomorrow, I hope you will join in the fun of the Kids’ State Dinner.
Thanks!
First Lady Michelle Obama
P.S. – To get a preview of some of the great recipes, go here.
