European Council on Thursday adopted a new
legislation which enshrines stronger rules for firearms' exports and
imports in a bid to fight against illegal arms trafficking. The new legislation improved tracing and control of imports and exports of civilian firearms from and to the EU territory.Exports of firearms will be subject to export authorizations, and
will provide necessary information to trace them, including the country
of origin, and the description of the firearms among others."Stronger control of firearms entering or leaving the EU will help us
prevent their misuse," said EU home affairs commissioner Cecilia
Malmstrom.
In the meantime, the new legislation simplified procedures for temporary exports, imports and transit of small numbers of firearms for "verified lawful" purposes, such as recreation, repair or exhibition.
It also brought EU legislation in line with Article 10 of the UN Firearms Protocol, allowing its ratification by the EU which has been pending since 2002.
