Patna, August 5, 2011: Md Islam of Patna registered a historic win at his home course on Friday in the final round of the PGTI Feeder Tour-event played at the Patna Golf Club. A new record was established on
the PGTI as Md Islam triumphed against Md Nawab, Karan Vasudeva and Rajesh Kumar Rawat in a marathon playoff encounter that was decided on-the eighth playoff hole. This was the longest running playoff in the-five-year history of the PGTI.
Md Islam (73-66-67) ended the regulation 54 holes of the tournament with a total score of four under 206 after shooting a three under 67 in the final round that included four birdies and a bogey. Md Nawab
(72-65-69), another Patna-based golfer who also happens to be Islam’s younger brother, along with Delhi’s Karan Vasudeva (68-69-69) and Lucknow Rajesh Kumar Rawat (69-68-69) also ended up with a total of
four under 206 after the completion of 18 holes in the third and final round and thus joined Islam in a four-way sudden death playoff to decide the winner.
The playoff was held on the 18th hole. The players were to repeat the18th hole until there was a clear winner.
Rajesh Kumar Rawat was the first casualty in the playoff as he bogeyed the first play off hole while the other three golfers made pars on thesame hole. Karan Vasudeva put up a gallant fight till the fifthplayoff hole but was edged out by Islam and Nawab after he found thegreenside bunker on the fifth hole and as a result made bogey.Vasudeva’s exit meant the two brothers from Patna were left to slug itout for the title. Finally, it was the 49-year-old Islam who prevailed over the 31-year-old Nawab, after the latter missed a two feet putt
for par on the eighth playoff hole.
Md Islam, who won the seventh title of his professional career onFriday, said, “I’m delighted to have won in front of my home crowd. My ball-striking was great all day. A crucial birdie putt from 10 feet on
the 18th hole (final hole of round three) helped me get into theplayoff. I then played some consistent golf by making pars on all the eight playoff holes and kept myself in contention.
“The idea was to hit it to the right of the flag to set up a decentbirdie putt. However, the putts were not rolling for me. Finally, itwas my experience and patience that paid off as Nawab lost focus andmissed an easy par putt on the eighth playoff hole that led to my victory. Mental strength is very important in such close encounters and that’s what helped me win the title.”
Md Islam took home the winner’s cheque worth Rs. 76, 290.
Md Sanju of Kolkata claimed fifth place with a total of one under 209.

IT department "very lenient" to BCCI, says Parl panel
Accusing the Income Tax Department of being "very lenient" to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a Parliamentary panel on Tuesday said it allowed the cricketing body to "enrich its coffers at the expense of the exchequer".
Headed by former Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, the Standing Committee on Finance has asked the IT department, Reserve Bank of India and Corporate Affairs Ministry to expedite their investigations into the affairs of the BCCI and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The report of the Committee, which was tabled in Parliament, also regretted that the much-loved cricket -a gentleman's game is getting "sullied and embroiled in transgressions of law off the field".
The BCCI, which sponsored the IPL, has drawn strong criticism on account of allegations of economic and financial wrongdoings, violation of tax laws, Prevention of Money Laundering Act, Company Law and RBI regulations.
Noting that ITD has been very lenient in taxing BCCI, the Committee said, the matters should be "thoroughly probed and an action taken report (be) furnished to the Committee within one month".
It further said that all pending tax assessment case of BCCI should be finalised on the strength of the Department's decision to withdraw exemption originally granted to the cricketing body.
Although the tax exemption granted to BCCI was withdrawn in December 2009 with retrospective effect from assessment year 2007-08, the ITD has not been able to complete scrutiny assessment for some years, the report said.
The Committee said the grounds on which the tax exemption to BCCI was withdrawn seems to be purely 'technical' and 'specious' rather than invoking the determining substantive issue of commercialisation of cricket, which has over the years been turned into a money-spinning business.
"It is a matter of surprise that when the crass commercialisation of cricket was visible to the entire world, the Income Tax Department chose to ignore it. When they finally woke up from their slumber and decided to withdraw the tax exemption, it was on a mere 'technical' ground of promoting other sports," the report said.
The Committee further said that it expects the income tax assessment relating to BCCI-IPL for all the relevant assessment years are taken up on priority and finalised in a coordinated manner after taking necessary inputs from investigating agencies as well.
The Committee, the report said, gathers that investments made by certain IPL franchisees, namely Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians have been routed from outside Indian through entities located in countries such as Mauritius, Bahamas and British Virgin Island.
"Strangely enough, it was not thought fit by these entities to seek approval from RBI, FIPB or other agencies concerned", the Committee noted.
"The Committee would like the Government to thoroughly investigate the a fore-mentioned violations committed by BCCI and other specified IPL franchises," the report said.

Russia has offered to help India establish a National Disaster and Crisis Management Centre, the government informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
During the visit of the Indian delegation headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram, Russia had highlighted the need to rapidly concertise cooperation under the Inter Governmental Agreement on Disaster Management signed in December 2010 and urged early setting up of the joint commission envisaged under it, Minister of State for Home Mullapally Ramachandran said.
"Russia further offered to help India establish a National Disaster and Crisis Management Centre. The details of the proposal for setting up a crisis management centre in the country are being ascertained," he said in Lok Sabha while replying a question.
The Russian National Crisis Management Centre carries out operational management of on-duty forces in emergency situations and ensures population warning in case of major accidents and disasters.
It further integrates the unified information network of all the structures involved in emergency prevention, forecasting and response.

Strong quake shakes Japan's Fukushima
A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake shook northeast Japan's Fukushima prefecture, home to a crippled nuclear power plant, on Sunday, but there was no risk of tsunami, seismologists said.
Local police said they had no immediate reports of casualties or major damage from the tremor which hit at 3:54am (1854 GMT Saturday).
The quake was centred around 100 kilometres (60 miles) south-southeast of Fukushima city, Japan Meteorological Agency and the US Geological Survey said, at a depth of about 40 kilometres.
